Discover how young people in Kajiado County are joining their mothers in climate-smart agriculture, entrepreneurship, and cooperative leadership, ensuring intergenerational continuity and innovation.

In the heart of Kajiado County, a quiet generational shift is taking root. As women continue to lead through the FAIR for ALL Project, their daughters and sons are watching, learning, and joining the movement. What began as a women-led initiative in climate-smart agriculture, savings, and enterprise is now inspiring an entire generation of young people.

A Generation Reconnecting with the Land

For years, many rural youths in Kajiado viewed agriculture as a last resort, something their parents did out of necessity, not choice. But as mothers began transforming their households through the Rural Women Network (RWN) initiatives, the narrative began to change.

Through the FAIR for ALL Project, RWN intentionally integrated youth engagement into its programs. At the Livelihood Learning Centres (LLCs), young people are now active participants in trainings on climate-smart agriculture, financial literacy, and enterprise development.

Blending Traditional Knowledge with Modern Skills

The approach is hands-on. Young women learn to establish kitchen gardens using water-efficient methods like cone gardens and raised beds, while young men assist in installing drip irrigation systems, harvesting water, and supporting value addition.

Some youth groups have even begun to specialize in nursery management, producing seedlings for sale to cooperatives and local farmers. Others are exploring digital marketing through WhatsApp and Facebook, using social media to promote indigenous vegetables, beadwork, and other products.

From Learners to Leaders

RWN has also placed emphasis on life skills and leadership development for rural youth. Trainings include topics such as communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, and entrepreneurship. By participating in community meetings and cooperative activities, young people learn the importance of civic engagement and responsible leadership.

A New Perspective on Leadership and Gender

For many young women, joining the FAIR for ALL Project has been life-changing. In communities where leadership roles were traditionally held by men, they are now stepping into visible positions of influence. RWN's mentorship programs encourage girls to see themselves as future leaders.
